Ioan Tomsa started hiding his face when he was 7. It was at that age that doctors took out his right eye and the surrounding cheek bone during surgery to remove a benign tumor pressing against his brain. The Romanian boy was left with a face that appeared caved in on the right side, with a dark hole where his eye had been. People gawked at him. He began to hold his right hand over his face and turn away from people. Tomsa describes the way he felt in one word: "Ashamed." "This was the only thing they could do," said Rodica Lupu, a Romanian pediatrician. "They didn't think of the look and the aesthetic outcome." Lupu did consider "the look," and she worked to bring Tomsa (pronounced TOM-sha) to the United States for surgery to reconstruct his face. She needed to find highly skilled experts willing to work without pay and hosts able to take in a young Romanian who spoke little English.
Cardinal notes: Clement's return uncertain
JUPITER, Fla. -- Matt Clement made his first start of spring, throwing for the Cardinals' Class AA team in a scrimmage, but Cardinals pitching coach Dave Duncan is not certain when the righthander will be ready to join the rotation. | MLB pageDuncan compared the progress of Clement, returning from shoulder surgery, to Chris Carpenter rehabilitating from elbow surgery."They're not at a place where you can confidently say they're going to be a big part of the rotation," Duncan said. "They're just not at that place. … (Clement) has still got a ways to go before you can sit there and say, yes, he is going to be a part of our rotation."Duncan agreed that Mark Mulder, who threw well in batting practice Tuesday, is closer to returning than Clement. Mulder, who also had shoulder surgery, could be back by May.Clement threw 37 pitches in a game pitting Class AA Springfield against Class AAA Memphis.

Until it opens in late 2011, curious area residents can explore a simulated version of the medical center created by the public hospital district and Cisco Systems Inc.Built in a virtual, three-dimensional world known as "Second Life" on the World Wide Web, the simulation is already being heavily used by health-care industry insiders who want to see how futuristic technology is being incorporated into the new medical center.Members of the public can take the virtual tour if they download the necessary software and go through a quick and free registration process with Second Life.The virtual tour can be found virtualpalomarwest.org.

Many stars from tinsel town graced the inaugural function of Shankar Eye Care Centre owned by Dr. Vijay Shankar, son of the late actor Jaishankar. Many actors and filmmakers made it a point to attend the function as a token of their friendship and respect towards the late actor. Madhavan, Napolean, Sathyaraj, Charlie, Ram Kumar, Crazy Mohan, Y.G. Mahendra, S. Vee. Shekar, Charan, and Murugadas were among those who attended the function. The hi-tech clinic, located in R.A. Time trials open track season
With a little help from Mother Nature, the area prep track and field season might just get its first competition of the season in this afternoon.The annual Butte High Time Trials are set to begin at 3:15 p.m. at Charlie Merrifield Track at Bulldog Memorial Stadium on the campus of East Middle School. Along with host Butte High, Butte Central, Dillon and possibly Boulder are expected to compete.The Butte High boys are coming off a very good season in which they took second at the state meet last May. However, the Bulldogs will be without the services of all-around star Tony Cunneen, who scored the lion's share of points for the 'Dogs at state.Actually, Butte High has only two athletes back who placed at divisionals, and only one who scored a point at state � Dylan Grady, who took sixth in the long jump last May."As of right now, I have no idea who is running what," said longtime Butte High track coach Charlie Merrifield.
