| Joffe accuses TLC Vision of 'acting blindly'
Dr. Stephen Joffe, founder and former CEO of LCA-Vision Inc., parent company of LasikPlus, TLC Vision Corp.'s largest competitor, wrote another letter to TLC Vision claiming its board has acted blindly in running the company. Last week, Joffe disclosed ownership of a 5 percent voting position in TLC Vision and made public a letter blasting the company. He also proposed joining the company as executive chairman or CEO to implement strategic and business model changes for the company, a request TLC declined in a response letter. Mississauga, Ontario-based TLC Vision Corp. (Nasdaq: TLCV; TSX: TLC), which provides eye surgery services, has its U.S. headquarters in St. Louis. Joffe does not have a current relationship with LCA-Vision. Bend Man Is Expecting in July
It sounds like something that might have been published by the late, lamented Weekly World News, but apparently its for real: A Bend man is pregnant. Thomas Beatie tells his story in The Advocate, a national gay-lesbian-bisexual-transgendered publication. According to his account, he was born female but underwent hormone treatments and surgery to become a man, is legally recognized as a man and is legally married to his wife, Nancy. The couple dreamed of having a child, Beatie writes, but Nancy had undergone a hysterectomy many years ago. Having retained his female reproductive organs when he changed sex, however, Beatie himself was able to conceive by artificial insemination. On the first attempt the result was an entopic pregnancy one in which the embryo implants in a Fallopian tube instead of in the uterus but the second try was successful, Beatie writes, and we are proud to announce that this pregnancy is free of complications and our baby girl has a clean bill of health.
Cards Notebook: Clement's return uncertain
Matt Clement made his first start of spring, throwing for the Cardinals' Class AA team in a scrimmage, but Cardinals pitching coach Dave Duncan is not certain when the righthander will be ready to join the rotation. Duncan compared the progress of Clement, returning from shoulder surgery, to Chris Carpenter rehabilitating from elbow surgery. "They're not at a place where you can confidently say they're going to be a big part of the rotation," Duncan said. "They're just not at that place. … (Clement) has still got a ways to go before you can sit there and say, yes, he is going to be a part of our rotation." Duncan agreed that Mark Mulder, who threw well in batting practice Tuesday, is closer to returning than Clement. Mulder, who also had shoulder surgery, could be back by May.
